2000 GUINEAS 1956

The 148th winner of the 2000 Guineas, held on Wednesday 2nd May 1956 over the Rowley Mile, was Gilles De Retz (50/1), a bay colt by Royal Charger out of Ma Soeur Anne, owned by Mr Anthony G Samuel and trained at Woodway, Blewbury by Mrs Helen Johnson Houghton. Note that her Trainers Licence had to be held by her assistant Charles Jerdein, because the Jockey Club did not allow women to hold the Licence. She eventually got her Licence in 1966, and in December 1977 the Jockey Club finally acknowledged that she was the trainer and Official records were changed accordingly. The winner won by a length in 1 minute 38.76 secs, with a length and a hlaf back to the third. A field of 19 runners contested the race which was worth £10,600 (Equivalent to £256,000 in 2017)
